Portrait

This blog tries to tie together tidbits, tips and tricks around my life as somebody with a masters degree in physics, a 7 year experience as a game programmer, an ongoing dedication to teach this stuff and a much too great love for gadgets.

I am at the cross-roads once again. So I foray into other stuff like robots (or lets say interaction devices), painting, photography and the quest to find my own niche and break through barriers, especially the ones in my head.

I have started taking music lectures, first “Composition in Lisp” then “Digital Sound Synthesis” and now I am in a music project and starting in music research. I even bought a guitar and an Eigenharp Pico.

I love lisp, python, supercollider, Scala and Arduino. I love my N900, my Nintendo DS with Animal Crossing and the Korg DS10 synthesizer. I play mostly RPGs like Oblivion, Neverwinter Nights 2 and Sacred 2. Sometimes I play Magic, Battleforge, which is cards mixed with RTS and for a long time I played pen-and paper RPGs.

And yes I know I am not up to date with my games, this is because mostly these days I play max/msp, with a joystick, supercollider, pure data or CuteCsound, sometimes even processing, openframeworks or panda3d.

It may seem a little bit jack-of-all-trades, but for me it has more to do more with the Renaissance ideal of a complete human being. I see things as interconnected. For instance music is a lot of physics with a lot of mathematics thrown in, on the sound synthesis level. In electronic music, programming knowledge helps, because you try to synthesize the sounds with a computer. And music composition has a lot to do with algorithms, the way Bach composed fugues has a lot to do with the way we construct computer programs, except that it was expected of him to use a lot of copy-and-paste, i.e. interweave the same notes in and out again.
